Jurors in the retrial of Michael Dunn have found him guilty in the shooting death of 17-year-old Jordan Davis.
Inside were tears and hugs, and outside were chants of “Jordan Davis” following the verdict of a jury made up of seven white men, three white women, one black man and one back woman read their final verdict.
Michael Dunn, the man charged with shooting unarmed Jacksonville teen Jordan Davis during a dispute over loud music, has been convicted of first-degree murder.
A gasp was heard in the audience as the verdict came down. Davis's father sobbed openly and Dunn's mother quietly wiped away tears.
Outside the courtroom, the Davis family was greeted with embraces by a crowd of supporters, including U.S. Representative Corinne Brown.
It was a moment of justice for Jordan, said his mother LuciaMcBath, but it was also bittersweet.
"We know that Jordan’s life and legacy will live on for others," she said. "But at the same time we’re very saddened by the life that Michael Dunn will continue to live."
That life will be spent behind bars without the possibility of parole, according to State Attorney Angela Corey.
Corey has been heavily criticized of late for her handling of recent cases, including the first Dunn trial and the murder trial of George Zimmerman, on which she served as a special prosecutor.
She called Wednesday's verdict "a vindication for justice."
Ron Davis, Jordan's father said he hopes this will shine a light on all of the families of those killed who did not receive a similar outcome.
"We must as Americans do a better job of loving one another," he said, holding back tears.
Dunn has already been convicted of three counts of attempted murder and shooting a deadly missile. For those charges, he faces at least 60 years in prison.
He is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 17.
