For a fifth year, the Stetson University College of Law is offering free will services to older veterans and their spouses who need to draft a will or end-of-life directives.
Even if you’re a veteran of modest means, you should still have a will according to Stetson’s Elder Consumer Protection Fellow, Brandon Robinson.
“By getting these estate planning documents done, especially the living will and the health care surrogate, it allows that person to state what their beliefs are on certain measures and appoint someone to carry out those beliefs on their behalf,” Robinson said.
Veterans and their spouses who are 60 and older with an income under $3,000 a month and liquid assets not over$100,000 are eligible for the free will services.
Robinson said if you don’t have a will, the state will decide how to distribute your assets among your relatives if something happens to you.
Signing up for the Stetson free will services is a three step process, which starts with a phone call for an appointment. Call (727)562-7577. The deadline to set up an appointment is Feb. 1, 2017.

An in-person appointment will be set and the law student will draft the documents. A volunteer attorney from Community Law Program will review the will and directives and a final signing will be scheduled with the veteran, law student and pro-bono attorney. The service, worth up to $500, is free.
