"Bring it on!" That was Michelle Faedo's response when asked if she would put her Cuban Sandwich up against one from Miami.
WUSF interviewed Michelle and her husband, Robert Faedo, when Tampa City Council was considering its vote to make the "Cuban" its signature sandwich in April.
Well, Michelle got her chance Saturday at the Cuban Sandwich Festival in Ybor City. The Cuban Sandwich contest attracted one Miami sandwich maker and dozens of Tampa Bay area restaurant and shop owners.
And Faedo won in the best "traditional" Cuban Sandwich.
Michelle's flavorful honey baked ham and tasty slow roasted pork won over the judges along with her use of La Segunda Central Bakery's Cuban bread. Her secret to a flavorful pressed Cuban is spreading it with a garlic-herb butter.
Just like the cigar worker families of last century, Tampa natives Michelle and Robert Faedo are city's newest generation of entrepreneurs. They sold their restaurant and now serve Cubans, deviled crab and burgers out of a food truck, Michelle Faedo's On the Go.
She's on Facebook and Twitter if you want to find out where she will be serving their award-winning Cuban sandwich at lunchtime.
