Dalí Named One of 20 Most Beautiful Museums

You may have been putting off a trip to the new Salvador Dalí Museum because you've already seen the artwork inside.

But what about the artwork on the outside -- as in, the building itself? A new ranking says the St. Petersburg structure is worth a visit for its architecture alone.

The arts and culture website Flavorwire.com recently released this list of the world's 20 most beautiful museums, in no apparent order.

The list puts Tampa Bay's Dalí in the company of museums like the Louvre in France, Spain's Guggenheim and the State Hermitage Museum in Russia.

"Those are museums that were built by princes or kings," said Dalí Museum director Hank Hine. "We did this on a shoestring, so we're really proud."

After nearly three decades in its old location, the Dalí Museum reopened in a $36 million glass structure in 2011. You can learn more about the building on this episode of WUSF's Florida Matters.

You can also view this slideshow of the museum's opening by WUSF's Steve Newborn.
