"Grab hands and join the fight against offshore drilling." That will be the message Saturday, when people across seven countries join "Hands Across the Sands/Hands Across the Lands" in asking the government to stop offshore oil drilling and the use of dirty fuels. The inaugural event was held just months before the BP Oil Spill in 2010 and has gained steam since then.
Hands Across the Sands grew into an international movement after the BP Oil Spill in April of 2010. The Florida Organizer for the Gulf Restoration network, Cathy Harrelson, says this event is all about people coming together to help protect our coasts.
“Why I'm very excited about this particular coalition is that is really shows that there is now really a unified effort that we recognize that we cannot continue to drill," she says, "to frack, you know, hydraulic fracture, mines coal and do all of the things that are continuing to bring dirty fossil fuels out of the ground.”
Events will be held locally at Indian Rocks Beach, St. Pete Beach, Gandy Bridge and the Picnic Island Park in Tampa on Saturday.
