Chef Greg Baker

The Seminole Heights neighborhood, once dotted with car repair shops, has become a key player in the growth of Tampa's culinary and craft beer scene.

Greg Baker has been at the forefront of the transformation in the now-trendy historic neighborhood. And he recently brought an additional boost of national attention to the area by receiving his fifth nomination for a James Beard Award, the Grammys of the food business.

Baker is the chef and co-owner of The Refinery and Fodder and Shine on Seminole Heights main strip of Florida Avenue. When he first opened The Refinery, an experimental food laboratory of sorts where the menu changes each day, no one in the are was doing anything like it.

WUSF's Lisa Peakes sat down with Baker to discuss his personal cooking philosophy and the unique personality of the Seminole Heights food and drink landscape.

In the video below, Baker talks about what makes a good food scene.

After more than 40 years learning and helping others understand more about so many aspects of our world and living in it, I still love making connections between national news stories and our community. It's exciting when I can find a thread between a national program or greater premise and what is happening at the local or personal level. This has been true whether I’ve spun the novelty tunes of Raymond Scott or Wilmoth Houdini from a tiny outpost in a Vermont field, or shared the voices of incarcerated women about what it’s like to be behind bars on Mother’s Day with the entire state of New Hampshire.
