This February, the Florida Orchestra is hoping everyone in the Tampa Bay region will be part of singing together.

Perhaps you sing in the shower or in your car. This February, the Florida Orchestra is hoping everyone in the Tampa Bay region will be part of singing together.

It's called "Sing Out Tampa Bay." Florida Orchestra Music Director Michael Francis came up with the idea a few years ago. Not really a singer himself, he said there have been studies to show singing together is beneficial.

"But it's something I've heard many times and about the idea that when you make music together, when you sing together and come together as a community and partake in this wonderful art form it is very healing and in a world which can be rather divisive, this is something which is really profound," Francis said.

Francis said you won't just be singing Handel and other Classical composers, because the music is chosen with the help of the community chorus, in fact, last year, the program included a song Homer Simpson sang, “Spider Pig.”

And it doesn't matter whether you are a trained singer or can't carry a tune, Francis said.

Sing Out Tampa Bay is February 7th at 7 p.m. at the Mahaffey in St. Pete and it’s free or pay what you can to participate.

I love telling stories about my home state. And I hope they will help you in some way and maybe even lift your spirits.
