Now that USF Polytechnic in Lakeland is becoming an independent university, one question is, what happens to all the current USF Poly faculty and staff?
Well, there may not be enough money to keep everyone on the payroll. The state Legislature only appropriated $10 million of the $18 million USF says it needs to absorb the faculty and staff.
USF President Judy Genshaft told USF Poly employees on Monday, "We will not be able to hire every single person," according to the Lakeland Ledger.
USF spokesman Michael Hoad says President Genshaft is working hard on this.
"She has worked enormously hard over the last two months to the point where there is a teach-out and there is a transition- there was not going to be a transition," Hoad said, "This was just going to end."
Hoad said nobody has any clear answers yet.
"The problem with the question and the problem with predicting the future, there's still a lot of unknowns," he said, "The bill was only signed on Friday."
Hoad said USF's Human Resource Department will work with every individual to see what is appropriate for staff. He said USF Poly employees can apply for available positions with the USF system. They can also apply for positions at the new Florida Polytechnic University which starts operating July 1st.
