President Obama and Mitt Romney have very different opinions about immigration. But both of them agree on one thing: giving green cards to international students with advanced degrees.
What that would mean for Florida?
"I would staple a green card to a diploma for someone who gets an advanced degree in America."
Thats Mitt Romney. He says President Obama hasn't done enough to retain talented foreign students. But Obama seems to agree with Romney:
"as soon as the get their degree we send them home... to invent new products and create new jobs somewhere else. That doesn't make sense."
It can take more than five years for a foreign national with an advanced degree to get a green card. And Congress has refused to change the green card quota, with some arguing the immigrants would take jobs away from Americans.
Giving out more green cards to advanced graduates would mean a lot to Florida.
Governor Scott says there's a shortage of graduates in science, technology, engineering and math.
And almost thirty thousand foreigners are here for higher education this year -- many of whom might want to stay.
