NPR's show Tell Me More opened up a conversation this morning about education reform. It was heard here on WUSF and it included two people at the very core of the issue.... students.
One of those students is Shakira Locket, student at Miami Dade College.
Locket graduated from Coral Gables Senior High school but once she reached college, she realized she wasn't prepared.
Locket says she was not happy about having to take 5 remedial courses.
"I do feel angry about the cost and how it takes longer, because you don't even know that the remedial classes doesn't count for your major, it's like you're going to school for no reason all over again," she says.
Locket says schools don't do a good job preparing students for the next step.
"I think students need more help, more people there to support them, more hands on training, let them know what they need to prepare for, let them know what they need to study for so they're not lost in the real world," she says.
Locket graduates from Miami Dade College this semester. She hopes to go to either FAU or UCF and finish her mass communications degree.
