Changes are coming to Hillsborough County School District's Special Education department. It's under scrutiny after the deaths of two special ed students. It starts with a transfer for the department head.
The general director of the Special Education Department for Hillsborough's School District was Joyce Wieland, but she's moving to a different department that oversees magnet and charter schools instead.
Her leaving comes as district officials are dissecting a new report that outlines changes for the special ed department after one student wandered from class and drowned. Another student couldn't breathe while being transported in a school bus.
County school district spokesman Steve Hagerty says one of the district's goals is to make communication better across the board.
"I'm not sure that on a daily basis that a student would necessarily notice something," says Hagerty, "we're just trying to standardized some things that might be very very well in terms of communion at one school and might not be doing as well at another school."
The report outlines changes in communication, training, personnel, and technology.
