Sarasota County School District To Host Digital Town Hall

The Sarasota County School district is putting a new spin on the typical town hall meeting. On Wednesday, families can interact with school officials on a computer, tablet or smart phone.

The district's Digital Town Hall will be broadcast on its website, local cable TV, and on Facebook Live.

Superintendent Todd Bowden said the district hopes the digital approach will increase community participation.

"We had done town halls previously but typically what that meant was we would go to the auditorium at one of our local high schools and the turnout would be spotty at best,” he said. “We live in a digital world now, so we wanted to meet our community where they live."

During the event, the superintendent and members of the Sarasota County School Board will take questions in real time on Facebook and Twitter.

Viewers can also submit a question in advance to scstownhall@sarasotacounty schools.net

Bowden said his office has already received several email questions on a range of topics.

"The (topics) go from traffic patterns around schools, to school lunches, to support of extracurricular activities."

The Digital Town Hall happens Sept. 6th, from 7 to 8 p.m.

The inaugural event will be broadcast live on The Education Channel on Comcast Cable’s channel 20 and Frontier’s channel 33 as well as the district’s website and Facebook page.
