For nearly two decades, Pinellas County schools have operated magnet programs for students from elementary through high school to teach journalism. The 14th annual installation of some of their work will soon be on display for the public to see.
The program, "Journeys in Journalism," started in 2001 as a collaboration between the Tampa Bay Times and Pinellas County Schools, according to program coordinator Crystal Pruitt.
“The program is set that they can start as early as kindergarten, and work their way through high school with the goal of pursuing higher education in a journalism-related field and hopefully work in the industry,” Pruitt said.
Three St. Petersburg schools participate in the magnet program: Melrose Elementary, John Hopkins Middle School and Lakewood High.
The hands-on training has helped to shape what Pruitt calls the students' "God-given talents."
Starting Jan. 11, student photographs and multimedia projects will be on display at St. Petersburg's The Studio@620, as part of the exhibition, "Through Our Eyes: Midtown and Beyond."
This year, the students focused on architecture and construction.
