Pinellas County Residents Receiving Free Flu Shots

Residents in Pinellas are getting an early Halloween treat: free flu vaccines.

With cooler weather on its way soon, flu season is close behind.

Pinellas County’s Florida Department of Health will be hosting their annual flu vaccination event "Flu Boo IV" Wednesday, Oct. 18 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at 6350 76th Ave N in Pinellas Park.

Participants will be able to receive their flu shot inside the center or use the center’s drive-through.

Since the shots are free, there is no need for insurance information. However, they do use Medicaid information.

Vaccines will be provided to adults and children three years and older.

Vaccinations end at 8:30 p.m. or when supplies runs out.

Yearly vaccinations are advised due to constant changes of the viruses and vaccinations. Children can receive vaccination starting at six months. Seniors, pregnant women and people with underlying health conditions are especially advised to get the vaccination.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises to get a flu shot early in the fall since it take two weeks for the antibodies to develop.

Schools, daycares and nursing homes are susceptible to flu outbreaks. During last year’s flu season, Pinellas County experienced more than five outbreaks, with the majority of them in nursing homes and long-term assisted care.
