Plant City Police Chief Steve Singletary was fired today after an investigation into alleged misconduct.

City Manager Greg Horwedel said at a news conference Tuesday that an extramarital affair was involved - as well as a coverup that violated police department policies.

"I want to emphasize at this point that Mr. Singletary was not fired solely because he had an extramarital affair," Horwedel said. "I understand that these things happen in today's world, whether I like it or not. The most important issues for me were Mr. Singletary's actions relating to the code of conduct. Taken in the aggregate, I believe these findings and others severely compromise Mr. Singletary's ability to serve as the city of Plant City's police chief."

Horwedel says Singletary was caught in the affair by the woman's husband, and that it happened while he was attending a work-related conference. He says Singletary had relations with the woman while he was on work duty, and that he took sick time.

Singletary was suspended on January 17th. His termination takes effect Wednesday.
