Polk Inmate Likely Died From Medical Problems, Officials Say

Polk County Sheriff's Office
Keith Harrison

The autopsy results for 65-year-old Polk County inmate Keith Harrison are in. Authorities said he was found unresponsive in the medical dorm of the South County jail on Sunday morning.

And Polk County Sheriff's Office Spokeswoman Carrie Horstman said the autopsy results are consistent with a death from chronic medical problems.

"Well, it's pending toxicology so they don't like me to get into details until they have the exact cause of death," Horstman said. "There's no trauma, no foul play, nothing suspicious, it does appear to be a medical-related death."

Harrison, who was arrested May 5, 2016, for failing to register as a sex offender, went through a health check when he was brought to the jail, Horstman said. Based on that, he was sent directly to the medical unit for heart-related problems.

It could take at least six weeks for toxicology results to be returned, Horstman said.
