This year is the 68th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a declaration adopted by the United Nations on Dec. 10, 1948.
To honor this anniversary, Youth for Human Rights, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the education of human rights, is hosting “Stand Up for Human Rights” Sunday, Dec. 4.
The event will include a walk, followed by speeches, entertainment and a barbeque.
The speakers include Hillsborough County Public Defender Julianne Holt, former President of the St. Petersburg chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Manuel Sykes and more.
The event aims to educate people on their rights. Gracia Bennish, President of United for Human Rights and emcee of the event, believes education about human rights is the key to action.
“You continually make people aware of what these (rights) are, and they’re just not words on a page, but behavior, and the more we have of that, the better off our planet will be,” Bennish said.
They are expecting more than 500 people at the event. It’s free to attend, and open to the public.
The event starts at the Church of Scientology Tampa, located at 1300 East 8th Ave., Tampa 33605.
