As of August 31st of this year, there were nearly 13 million active registered voters in Florida.
And today is National Voter Registration Day, a day when elections supervisors across the state are bringing voter registration drives out into the community. But the community piece is key.
Lori Edwards, Polk County Elections Supervisor says community partnerships and volunteers are essential to this campaign.
"We really benefit from the enthusiasm of working with people in the community who many times are taking the day off to go out there and help more people get involved in our process," she said.
Edward said she was excited to see that the among the many groups helping out today, the Young American Dreamers was one of the first organizations to volunteer to assist with the drive for new voters.
In Polk County, there will be events in places including Auburndale, Davenport, Fort Meade and Winter Haven.

Because of state law, come Sunday, Oct. 1, Floridians will have the option of registering to vote online.
People in other states have been able to do this for some time.
"Florida was one of the last states to the dance, if you will, but also it's because more and more we're relying on the Internet, whether it's an app on our phone or something on our laptop or tablet, we pretty much expect that we can do everything, including our banking online, so it's only natural for people to expect to register to vote online," Edwards said.
