Florida Emergency Management Head Leaving For Private Sector

Florida Division of Emergency Management
Bryan Koon

Florida's top emergency management official is stepping down to take a job in the private sector.

Gov. Rick Scott announced Tuesday that Florida Division of Emergency Management Director Bryan Koon will leave his position at the end of the month. He took over the agency in 2011, shortly after Scott became governor. Officials didn't say what Koon's new job would be.

Koon notified Scott of his intention to resign on Sept. 1, but the governor asked him to remain throughout September because of potential hurricanes forming in the Atlantic Ocean. Hurricane Irma hit Florida on Sept. 10, causing flooding, power outages and other damage throughout the state.

Wes Maul will take over as interim director. Maul currently serves as the agency's chief of staff.
