A young female chimpanzee has been found dead at a Tampa zoo from what appears to be an attack by at least one other chimp.

Officials at Lowry Park Zoo said in a news release that Keeva was found dead Wednesday morning.

Chief Zoological Officer Larry Killmar says Keeva had been spending the night with two adult chimpanzees, Twiggy and Nick. The older primates had been showing normal interactions with Keeva.

Chimpanzee specialist Judy McAuliffe says the animals are constantly negotiating their social standings, and fights with injuries and deaths are common in the wild.

Killmar says they are bringing in an outside team to review the social dynamics of their chimpanzee troop.

Keeva arrived at Lowry Park in 2015 after her mother rejected her at another zoo. She was fostered by a chimp named Abby.
