Watergate Legend Bob Woodward To Speak In St. Petersburg

One of the key reporters behind the Watergate investigation and the subsequent resignation of President Richard Nixon is coming to St. Petersburg Wednesday night.

Bob Woodward, associate editor of the Washington Post, is speaking at 7:30 p.m. at the Mahaffey Theater. WUSF's Steve Newborn asked him about his talk and if the controversy over "fake news" is affecting the ability of legitimate journalists to connect to their audience.

Woodward has won two Pulitzer Prizes and a half-dozen top journalism awards, as well as authoring 18 books about presidents and politics. He's currently working on a book about President Donald Trump's first year.

He says despite the barrage of fake news and accusations against the media leveled by the president, he says it's the job of journalists to remain objective and not get personal when it comes to attacking - or being attacked - by President Trump.

He plans to talk at the Mahaffey about the current state of journalism, as well as taking trips back to his days during the Watergate investigation with Carl Bernstein; the Iran-Contra investigation that bedeviled the Ronald Reagan administration; and the Monica Lewinsky scandal that embroiled President Bill Clinton.

He plans to spend half the evening taking questions from the audience.
