In a matter of seconds early Tuesday morning, an implosion marked Tampa International Airport’s next step toward executing its master plan and expansion.

At 2 a.m., dynamite ignited and the final demolition of the old Red Side Rental Car Garage was completed.

According to airport officials, the demolition – part of Phase 2 of the airport’s expansion plans -- will allow for new express curbside drop-offs and allow quicker access for travelers with no checked bags.

Among the improvements in the airport’s final phase include a 16-gate Airside D, increasing the airport’s capacity to 34 million passengers annually.

The airport was closed from 1-2:30 a.m. during the demolition process.
