Gas prices may be going down, but they’re still a huge issue in the U.S. Senate race in Florida -- and each side is making some questionable claims, according to PolitiFact.
Republican candidate Rep. Connie Mack recently said, "I have always said that I would be for drilling." But Angie Holan of PolitiFact Florida says that claim received the group’s worst possible rating: Pants on Fire.
She says in 2005 and 2006, “he was very much against drilling off the Florida coast.” And there’s lots of evidence in Mack’s own press releases.
But in 2008, with Sarah Palin saying, “Drill, Baby, Drill,” Mack switched to a more pro-drilling position, Holan said.
He held that position even during the BP oil spill.
Meanwhile, a pro-Mack super PAC is running an ad saying Sen. Bill Nelson "chose to side with President Obama" against the Keystone pipeline.
PolitiFact rates that half-true.
Holan says Nelson did oppose the current route of the pipeline because it may threaten some water supplies. But he has left the door open to supporting the pipeline in the future if changes are made.
