Rick Scott Would Lose to Relatively-Unknown Democrat Nan Rich, According to PPP Poll

U.S. Sen. Rick Scott said Sunday that he was never told by Homeland Security officials in 2016 when he was Florida's governor that Russian hackers had gained access to voter databases in two Florida counties ahead of the presidential election.

Almost nobody in Florida knows who Nan Rich is...and she'd trounce Gov. Rick Scott if she ran against him.

That's the conclusion of a PPP poll that also says Scott is less popular than the polarizing Miami Heat star LeBron James.

By the way, Nan Rich is minority leader of the Florida Senate, and she's announced her intention to run for governor in 2014.

And despite the fact that 86 percent of poll respondents don't know Nan Rich, she still leads Scott in a hypothetical match-up, 47-35 percent.

The poll says more about Scott's continued unpopularity than support for Rich. Only 31 percent of voters approve of the job Scott is doing -- down from the last poll. This despite an unemployment rate in Florida that's falling faster than the rest of the nation.

Scott is weak among women and independents as well as Democrats, and even 17 percent of Republicans say they'd support Rich over Scott.

"While his new approval rating—31%—isn’t the worst he’s ever polled, Scott may have finally hit rock bottom," says a PPP press release.

"He is now officially less popular than one of the most polarizing figures in American pop culture, 3-time NBA MVP LeBron James.," who had a 32 percent approval rating in the poll.

Scott's continued unpopularity raises questions about the national impact of Gov. Scott Walker's victory in Wisconsin. If Scott is so unpopular in Florida, can you say conservative governors are being given a green light nationwide?

Also, Scott’s unpopularity has some impact on the presidential race here. How closely will Mitt Romney want to be associated with Scott during the Republican National Convention in Tampa this August?

Scott's support for a controversial effort to purge voter rolls of non-citizens may be hurting him. The poll says 50 percent of Florida voters disapprove of the voter purge, and only 34 percent approve.

The poll also shows increasing support for gay marriage in Florida -- although a plurality of Florida voters still oppose gay marriage -- 45-42 percent.

See more from the PPP poll below:

PPP surveyed 642 Florida voters from May 31st  to June 3rd. The margin of error for the survey is +/-3.9%. This poll was not paid for or authorized by any campaign or political organization. PPP surveys are conducted through automated telephone interviews.
