Top 5 Republican National Convention Smartphone Apps

TBO.com

Want to stay on top of the Republican National Convention?

Of course there's an app for that. Several, actually.

WUSF Public Media took several of these convention apps out of a test drive, and some performed better than others.

Here are five of our faves:

  1. Mitt's VP: Why waste precious seconds waiting for news of Mitt Romney's vice presidential pick to appear in your Twitter feed? When the candidate announces his running mate, you'll be the first to know. Well, you and the droves of supporters, haters and journalists who've already downloaded the free app. Available for iPhone and Android.
  2. RNC Visitors Guide: As you'd expect, this app from TBO.com offers breaking news, weather forecasts and traffic updates. It also features recommendations on everything from dining to shopping to beaches. Free for iPhone and Android.
  3. My2012 Tampa: Manage your event tickets (assuming you've actually scored tickets) and get alerts when your Facebook and LinkedIn friends arrive. The app also aggregates RNC-related tweets and Bloomberg headlines. Access to Yelp.com's Tampa city guide is a bonus. Available free for iPhone, iPad, Android and BlackBerry.
  4. Re:Con Conventions 2012 This free app from National Journal has both the Republican and Democratic conventions covered. Get news, schedules, city maps, speaker photos, pics from past conventions and more. Available for iPhone; Android and iPad apps are in the works.
  5. Obama for America: Okay, you got us. As the name implies, this free download is the antithesis of an RNC app. But it's important to study the competition! The app allows iPhone users to find volunteer events and share campaign news via Facebook, Twitter, email and text messages. Android app coming soon.
