As the United States debated using force in Syria following its alleged use of chemical weapons in August, many members of Congress criticized President Barack Obama’s military threat to dictator Bashar Assad as a bad diplomatic move.
Florida democratic representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz defended Obama recently -- telling CNN that Obama has more support for his Syria initiative than his predecessor, George W. Bush, had for the Iraq war.
In fact, Wasserman-Schultz said the United States "stood alone in the war in Iraq."
"PolitiFact Florida" gave Wasserman Schultz a "Pants On Fire" rating for the inaccuracy of that comment.
"The United States did have support going into Iraq. I don't know if she recalls the "coalition of the willing," said PolitiFact's Angie Holan. "Bush claimed the support of 35 countries for the action in 2003. And that's on par with what Obama has on Syria."
When the Iraq War actually started, President Bush claimed even more international support for the action. So, PolitiFact Florida gave Wasserman Schultz it's lowest rating on its "Truth-O-Meter" -- "Pants On Fire."
"She's making a really poor comparison here," Holan explained. "The support that Bush had in Iraq was on par and arguably exceeds what Obama had on Syria."
