Florida's New Lt. Governor Takes Office

Florida Governor's Office

Almost a year after Florida Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll resigned, the state has a new second in command.

Carlos Lopez-Cantera was sworn in today, Feb. 3, as Florida's 19th lieutenant governor.

With his wife  Renee Lopez-Cantera holding their baby Sofia in one arm and the Bible in her other hand, the former state legislator and Miami-Dade Property Appraiser was officially sworn in by 1st District Court of Appeal Chief Judge Joseph Lewis Jr.

The job of lieutenant governor has been vacant since last March.

Carroll abruptly resigned her as lieutenant governor after she was interviewed by law-enforcement authorities about work she once did for a charity that prosecutors have said was a front for a widespread gambling ring. She has not been accused of any wrongdoing.
