Gov.Rick Scott gave his State of the State address Tuesday and talked about issues that affect Floridians, like jobs and education.
Scott did not address medical marijuana, Medicare and Medicaid, reform of the state prison system or some other hot topics up for discussion in this year’s Legislative session.
After the address, WUSF's Carson Cooper talked with USF political science professor John Bertalan about what the governor did - and didn't - address.
“I thought it was interesting that before his speech, we addressed some topics in Florida like the prisons, educational testing and health care, Medicare, Medicaid - and he didn’t address any of those topics in his speech today,” Bertalan said.
Cooper said that in recent weeks the governor has been traveling the country “trolling for businesses, trolling for jobs” and that the first half of his address seemed addressed to “folks outside of Florida.”
Bertalan said the theme for Scott’s whole election was how many jobs he created.
Bertalan said Arthenia Joyner made some good points in her Democratic response to Scott's address.
“They have documented that in many newspapers around the state that almost all the jobs created around the state have been minimum wage jobs… I think she made a good point about what jobs he is creating, who they affect and maybe not helping the citizens as well,” Bertalan said.
Cooper and Bertalan also discussed Scott's position on education, which includes increased spending for K-12 schools and tax cuts for college textbooks.
