The City of Tampa will hire a sustainability officer to create a long-term plan for dealing with the effects of climate change. It’s one of the proposals Mayor Jane Castor announced in her first budget.

Castor told the city council Thursday that Tampa needs to get ready for rising temperatures and sea levels.

“We’ll look to cities around the globe that are leaders in sustainability and resilience and bring what's working back to Tampa to create a blueprint for changing Tampa’s future,” she said.

The mayor added that the sustainability officer will also help the city better prepare for hurricanes and other natural disasters.

Castor wants Tampa to reduce its carbon footprint and move to 100% renewable energy by 2045. Her budget also calls for more investment in storm water drains and replacing water and sewage pipes, some of which are 100 years old.
