Manatee County School Board

Rich Tatem is running in Manatee County’s House District 72, which became open when former Rep. Tommy Gregory, R-Lakewood Ranch, was named president of State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota.

The proposed development would provide 132 apartments on nearly five acres of district-owned land for Manatee County school district employees.

In a 4-1 vote, the Manatee County School Board elected Jason Wysong as the new superintendent for the district.

The Manatee County School District will replace Cynthia Saunders, who is retiring in June.

It comes as photos emerged of teachers covering bookcases with blankets to prevent getting in trouble.

The governor endorsed three school board candidates in Sarasota County and they all won.

Saunders will pay a $2,000 fine to the Education Practices Commission, have a letter of reprimand placed in her file, and take courses on ethics.

After weeks of contentious meetings that included racially-charged public comments, the board unanimously voted to end face mask requirements.

The vote won't affect the current school year, since it comes a day after students' last day of class, but would make masks optional at graduation and summer school.
