The landing Monday morning comes as the Caribbean nation is struggling with a surge of gang violence that has killed several thousand people in recent years and left hundreds of thousands homeless in the country’s capital.

The Department of Health and Human Services offered condolences in a statement Friday and said a review of health care records was underway and a medical examiner was investigating the death.

The teenager was detained at a facility in Safety Harbor and died Wednesday.

The closure, which is expected to last several days, is necessary for the safety of visitors and staff because of the resources and space needed to attend to the migrants. Concession-operated ferry and sea plane services are temporarily suspended.
