The California 18-year-old was 16 when he made most of the calls targeting religious institutions, high schools, colleges and universities, government officials and people across the United States, prosecutors said.

Federal prosecutors say a California teenager pleaded guilty Wednesday in a case involving the swatting of a Florida mosque, among other institutions and individuals.

The Department of Justice has already alerted elections officials of a higher than normal risk of swatting this election.

Police in Southwest and South Florida confirmed swatting and false calls of shooters on college and other school campuses — including USF Sarasota-Manatee.

The Manatee County sheriff says he is angry over a likely hoax that was repeated on campuses around the state.
