USF Fires Coach Skip Holtz

USF

The University of South Florida is expected to fire football coach Skip Holtz today, according to university sources. The school has scheduled a news conference at 4 p.m. today. The firing follows three tumultuous seasons and a 16-21 overall record.

The Tampa Bay Times reports the move, which came a day after a season-ending 27-3 loss to Pittsburgh, is a costly one for USF.

His dismissal comes less than six months after he was given an extension by athletic director Doug Woolard. The contract calls for the school to pay Holtz $2.5 million over the remaining five years on his contract.

Holtz was hired in January 2010 after winning two Conference USA titles with East Carolina, but saw USF post 1-6 records in the Big East in each of the last two years.
