Students at USF's Tampa campus got an unexpected - and likely unwelcome - break from final exams when power went out over much of the university Wednesday morning.
Shortly after 9:30 a.m., power went out for what Adam Freeman from USF Communications & Marketing said was "most of the campus." At least four intersections with traffic signals were affected. University Police ended up directing motorists at those intersections. Tampa Electric also dispatched repair crews to the campus to determine the cause and return service to the area.
Just before 11 a.m., USF Communications & Marketing put out the all-clear, saying power had been restored to all affected buildings. TECO spokeswoman Cherie Jacobs said the outage was caused by a faulty transformer at TECO's Fletcher substation.
As a result of the outage, the schedule for Wednesday's final exams was revised:
- 10 a.m. to noon will be extended to 12:30 p.m. - 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. will now be held from 12:45 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. THIS IS FOR WEDNESDAY, MAY 1 ONLY. Regular final exam schedules will remain in effect for the remainder of the day.
