USF Fraternity Gives Almost $9000 to Tampa Fire Memorial

Last November, the USF chapter of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity held its first annual Fireman's Challenge.

More than 400 members of USF's Greek system competed in a number of contests that mimicked the training of real firefighters, as well as a fire truck pull.

The event raised money for a planned memorial for Tampa Fire Rescue members who have died in the line of duty.

On Friday, fraternity members presented Tampa Fire Rescue Chief Tom Forward with a check for more than $8,600.

"This represents the second largest contribution we've had since this campaign has been going on,” Forward said. “And we cannot thank your chapter, University of South Florida and your whole fraternity for putting this together and really, really helping us jumpstart our Memorial Campaign Fund."

Pi Kappa Alpha chapter external vice president Jordan Romero organized the Challenge. He says it's likely going to become an annual event.

"From what I've heard, it's going to be the main fraternity philanthropy event at USF, which we are very excited for,” Romero said. “It was very exciting because it incorporates the Tampa community and it incorporates the students at USF."

"USF is a huge part of the Tampa community and firefighters, they're heroes of our city, and we wanted to make sure the money was to stay in Tampa," he added.
