He may be only in his second year in the U.S. Senate, but Florida Republican Marco Rubio is going places. Mexico and Colombia, to be precise.
Rubio's staff confirms he'll be attending the Summit of the Americas this weekend in Cartagena, Colombia. So, too, will President Obama.
Rubio is often mentioned as a possible running mate for Mitt Romney, and mixing with foreign heads of state at the Colombia confab could help his star rise even further.
But Rubio won't be riding to the summit on Air Force One. His trip, which stops first in Mexico, is being paid for by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. The 40-year-old son of Cuban immigrants is the only member of that panel who is attending the hemispheric huddle.
But Rubio won't be alone. His wife, Jeanette (who's of Colombian descent), will accompany him — "not at taxpayer expense," according to his spokesman.
