It will hurt your wallet a little bit less the next time you have to renew your license plates.
Starting Sept. 1, tag fees for cars, trucks and motorcycles will drop by about $17 to $25 each, depending on the type of vehicle and its weight.
Legislation passed during the 2014 session slashed the fees, which were increased in 2009, while Florida lawmakers were looking for ways to balance the state budget during tough economic times.
The bill to reduce the license plate fees was part of a $500 million election year tax-cut plan proposed by Gov. Rick Scott and passed by the Legislature.
Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles Spokesman John Lucas says the changes should be implemented smoothly.
According to Lucas, the state DMV and local tax collectors have urged people who had to renew at the higher rate prior to Sept. 1 to only pay for a one-year renewal, rather than for two years.
The overall savings to drivers in Florida will be about $400 million.
