Many of Florida’s immigration organizations and nonprofits are preparing to meet the demands of President Obama’s recent executive action on immigration.
The president’s plan mostly covers undocumented immigrants who have been living in the United States for more than five years and have children who were born here.
Those with no criminal records will qualify for work permits.
According to the , about one million undocumented immigrants live in Florida. About 300,000 will qualify under Obama’s executive action.
“This means for us that we’re going to have to find a way with some of our members and partners to reach some of those 300,000 families in Florida that can benefit from this help,” says Maria Rodriguez, executive director for the Florida Immigrant Coalition.
The coalition has about 64 alliances statewide.
Rodriguez says the groups would focus on rural migrant communities where she believes many will qualify for this deportation relief.
The coalition will hold information sessions and workshops in the coming weeks about the new immigration plan.
