A Florida State University probe cleared Jameis Winston of code-of-conduct violations stemming from a 2012 sexual assault allegation. But the most recent development does not mean the quarterback’s legal troubles are over.
A former Florida State University Student claimed Jameis Winston sexually assaulted her in December of 2012. A Tallahassee Police Department investigation into the claims sat idle for nearly a year. The state attorney’s office decided not to press charges, citing a lack of evidence. Now the issue has gone before retired Florida Supreme Court Justice Major Harding to determine whether Winston violated the school’s code of conduct. According to the Associated Press, Winston was facing four charges—two for sexual misconduct and two for endangerment. In a letter to Winston, Harding wrote the evidence was insufficient to satisfy the burden of proof.
Winston could have been expelled had he been found guilty of the violations.
Winston’s accuser can appeal the decision within five days. Winston could also still face a civil lawsuit. Meanwhile, FSU is still facing a federal investigation into whether it investigated the assault claims in a timely manner.
FSU's athletics department was aware of the charges in January of 2013 but did not forward the claims.
