Recent thunderstorms have caused wildfires to break out in coastal areas of Florida. State officials are warning against habits that could lead to more massive blazes. Just under 60 wildfires are burning in Florida, including a 1,000-acre fire that was sparked on Sunday in Gulf-bordering Taylor County. In a news release, State Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam says it’s likely more are on the way, with dry conditions and lightning strikes expected. To prevent fires caused by man, Putnam and the Florida Fire Service are urging people to keep a few guidelines in mind:
• Don’t start a fire when it’s windy
• Don’t leave a fire or grill unattended
• Always keep a shovel and hose nearby when starting a fire
And if you spot a fire in the wild, call 911 immediately.
