With the start of Hurricane season upon us, the state’s Attorney General not only wants Floridians to be prepared, she also wants the public to watch out for scammers.
Common storm-related scams can include tree and debris removal, building repair, and disaster relief scams.
Attorney General Pam Bondi says some things to look out for are contractors who just show up uninvited or offer to perform repairs at a discount with leftover supplies from another job.
Because many charities—some legitimate—crop up after natural disasters, she says Floridians should also look out for scam artists.
And, Bondi adds the public should watch out for price gouging, or the illegal practice of jacking up the price for emergency essentials, like the rental or sale of ice, water, and generators.
Last year, her office received more than 3,100 price gouging complaints for Hurricane Matthew. To report any suspected scams, call 866-9-NO-SCAM or visit MyFloridaLegal.com.
