Governor Rick Scott has approved a bill aimed at expanding 5-G wireless technology. But the measure also reduces local control. It takes away the ability of local governments to decide where the infrastructure for the technology should go, and how much to charge. The measure has garnered the attention of Tallahassee City Commissioners. Gil Ziffer brought the issue up during a recent budget meeting.
“They can go on just about anything we have and the most we can charge them is about $150 a pole and right now I think we negotiate when they put things on polls,” Ziffer said.
The bill goes into effect July 1, but Ziffer doesn’t expect to start seeing its impact for a few years while the technology becomes more widely available.
