UPDATE THURSDAY 5 PM: Air Force Hurricane Hunter aircraft data confirmed that Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine had became sufficiently organized to be classified as the eighth named storm of the season. Tropical Storm Harvey will likely move into the Caribbean over the weekend, and could even become a hurricane before approaching Central America or Mexico. There will likely be no threat to Florida or the United States from Harvey, but the tropical wave behind it is a potential concern next week.
ORIGINAL STORY: Three tropical waves could cause trouble in the tropics over the next ten days. Only one is a potential concern to the United States. While there are no immediate threats, the second tropical wave (referred to by forecast models as Invest 92) is projected to move in the general direction of the Sunshine State by late next week.
Invest 92is the second of three systems in the Atlantic, and the one that - if it develops - could affect Florida. As of Thursday afternoon, it was located about 1200 miles east of the Leeward Islands and was racing west-northwest at 20 mph. Some increase in organization has been observed with Invest 92 over the past 24 hours. While most reliable forecast models only show little or no development with this system, an outlier or two has shown some form of tropical development by the time it moves north of the Hispaniola next week. Considering the inherent uncertainty in any tropical wave before it develops, not to mention it's current projected path, Floridians are encouraged to watch the evolution of this system closely in the coming days.
A third tropical wave (referred to as Invest 93 by models) has just moved off the west coast of Africa. While development into a tropical cyclone is possible in the coming days, early indications are that it will likely make a curve to the northwest and stay out to sea.
