As he prepares to tour Florida’s college campuses, Tallahassee Mayor and gubernatorial hopeful Andrew Gillum is renewing his call to remove a Civil War memorial from the Florida Capitol.
Gillum, an African-American Democrat, says the move is necessary to prevent white supremacists from weaponizing symbols of the Confederacy.
“It’s my hope that my children, and frankly, that the children all across this state, don’t have to fight this battle, you know, 20 years from now.
That we’re still fighting over whether or not these monuments still have a place in civil society.”
Gillum thinks the monuments should be moved to museums to provide proper context. Gillum says Republican Governor Rick Scott is failing to show moral leadership by continuing to support President Donald Trump.
