Emails Lead To Data Breach At Healthy Kids

Wikimedia Commons

As many as 2,000 people who rely on children's health-insurance programs may have had their personal data stolen.

The Board of Directors was told Thursday that the agency was the target of a phishing scam over the summer and that the Social Security numbers of up to 2,000 people were available to unauthorized users for 24 hours.

The scam targeted one employee's email, which contained exchanges involving Social Security numbers. The employee had correspondence with members of the public who shared the sensitive information in the emails unsolicited.

The majority of the people who were affected are still enrolled, and their electronic accounts have been flagged. Letters also have been sent.

Florida Healthy Kids Corp. is offering people a one-year subscription to a security screening service at no charge. To date, 150 people have signed up.
