It’s crunch-time for the Federal Emergency Management Agency as Floridians impacted by Hurricane Irma scramble to meet this Friday’s deadline to register for disaster relief.
FEMA spokesman Gerard Hammink said on First Coast Connect Tuesday that the agency has already distributed around $900 million in disaster aid and completed 97% of the required site inspections in Florida.
But, he said, that’s not to say some people haven’t fallen through the cracks.
“People who are missed need to let FEMA know that they haven’t seen an inspector and either call our 800-number or come to a disaster recovery center if they can in these couple days and find out what’s happening with their application,” said Hammink.
FEMA currently has two disaster recovery centers on the First Coast where people can go for one-on-one help.
The one on FSCJ’s Kent Campus in Jacksonville is open until 7 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. until noon on Wednesday. The other in the Solomon Calhoun Center in St. Augustine is open Wednesday from 9 a.m. until noon and Friday from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m.
People who still need assistance can also reach out to FEMA by phone at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362); apply online at or use FEMA's mobile app.
