The rising use of biometrics by private companies is pushing Florida lawmakers to ensure consumers are aware and protected when giving up their information.

The increasing use of biometrics is rasing concerns amoung Florida lawmakers. Senator Gary Farmer and Representative Bobby DuBose, are proposing the Florida Biometric Information Privacy Act. The bill is  meant to make sure consumers are aware when their biometric information is being collected, and would also make companies collecting the information liable for the unauthorized distribution of the data.

“The Florida Biometric Information Privacy Act would ensure that all Floridians are notified in writing that their biometric information is being collected and what the process is for the use of those most private identifiers by organizations seeking it. This commonsense legislation will give Floridians the peace of mind to know that their most valuable information is being handled responsibly and that these private companies will be held accountable for the improper use or unauthorized distribution of their information,” DuBose says.

The Privacy Act will create guidlines and violations for those comapnies who collect biometric information.
