Dixie Highway, one of the oldest roadways in the country that's associated with former Confederate states, is under consideration for renaming by Miami-Dade.
The current name comes from the Mason-Dixon line, which separated slave-owned states from free-soil states in the north during the late 18th century.
The roadway's name didn't capture the attention of Miami-Dade leaders in 2017 when officials across the U.S. removed memorials in Louisiana, Maryland and Virginia.
Miami-Dade commissioners have recently introduced legislation to rename the highway.
South Dixie Highway runs along U.S. 1 from Southwest Miami to upper Monroe County. West Dixie Highway winds through Northeast Miami-Dade. A stretch called East Dixie Highway runs from Northeast 82nd to 87th streets in Northeast Miami.
