The St. Pete Pier will be temporarily closed Monday and Tuesday mornings, as contractors install permanent anchoring cables on an outdoor net sculpture by artist Janet Echelman.
The piece, called Bending Arc, is made of lightweight fiber and spans 346 feet across and 424 feet lengthwise. It is suspended 72 feet above a green space on the pier that opened to the public last month. The cables being installed are replacing temporary ones, and are designed to withstand winds of up to 150 mph, according to Echelman’s website.
The City of St. Petersburg said the pier will be closed to the public Monday from 4 a.m. to noon, as will access to the Pelican parking lot and all service and delivery to the Pier Head. Doc Ford's restaurant and the Spa Beach Bistro will be closed.
On Tuesday, it will remain closed to the public from 4 a.m. to noon, however service and delivery vehicles to the Pier Head, Spa Beach Bistro and Doc Ford's will be allowed. The Pelican and Dolphin parking lots will be open for permitted vehicles only.
