Credit the surging economies of South America and increased passenger routes -- Miami International Airport welcomed more international passengers between January and March of this year than any other U.S. airport according to the Sun-Sentinel, overtaking New York’s JFK airport, officials said.
More than 10.2 million passengers passed through Miami's airport for the first quarter of 2012 breaking all records for that same time period. That reflected an 11 percent increase in international passengers and an 8.1 percent rise in domestic passengers compared to 2011.
The surge in passenger traffic is due in part to added overseas routes to Mexico City and Barcelona and more expansion is in the works. The Sun-Sentinel reports:
Dutch Antilles Expres, starts daily non-stop service from Curaçao in the Netherland Antilles on May 11, and Brazil’s low-cost carrier GOL begins five weekly passenger flights from Sao Paulo via Caracas, Venezuela effective June 29.
